The classic Albanian cuisine is characterized by the regional products of the Mediterranean region. But while the Italian, Greek and Turkish cuisine has a similar composition of the basic foods they enriche it with individual touches in regarding spices, herbs, high-quality ingredients and preparation methods. In this respect Albania still lags far behind!

The meat from the charcoal grill is usually great, no less the fish and the standard side dishes - deep-fried potatoes, grilled vegetables, a kind of tzatziki, olives - often too. And all the salads on offer are fresh and crisp. But it's the oil for salads that divides opinion. Instead of tasty virgin olive oil, you will usually find a blend consisting largely of sunflower oil and refined olive oil - and meat preparation options are rare apart from roasting or grilling.

 

Pizza, pasta and risotto are also on the menu in many restaurants - if only because of the many Albanian-born Italians who regularly visit their families here and the historical connection with Italy - but any comparison with the Italian original should be avoided.

And vegetarians or even vegans will probably be looking for a change by the third restaurant visit at the latest.

Nevertheless, the beach restaurants in Spille, 7 km away, have an incomparable flair, especially at sunset, which makes up for a lot!

fish and seafood

Due to ou proximity to the sea, we have several fish stores in Kavaje that offer a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood every day. Click on the button to see some of the dishes we can create from it.

meat

Even if we don't consume a lot of it, meat is always on our personal menu from time to time. Just because it provides high-quality, vital proteins that our body can't produce itself and many important nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium and B vitamins.

Further more, factory farming is not an issue here in the countryside! Everything on display in the small butchers' shops here has been reared and kept in a species-appropriate way that many animals with an organic label in the EU only dream of.

And we often get our meat from neighbors with very small animal stocks that pick and nibble their way through the meadows and olive groves from early in the morning until late at the evening... .

The mild climate in Albania gifts us with fresh vegetables during the whole year - of course, more of one and less of the other depending on the season - which we refine with feta or yoghurt from goats, sheep or cows, as well as with Parmesan, Gorgonzola or the local hard cheeses - and last but not least with the eggs from our hard-working flock of chickens.

vegan

Many renowned studies show that too much animal protein slags the blood and lymph vessels, leads to joint problems (arthritis, gout) and puts a strain on the heart and kidneys. Our diet should therefore only consist of 10% animal protein on average.

Therfore vegan days give a rest to the body, which we sometimes like ourselves, too. This has inspired us to create many exciting dishes.
